About this wine
When you want a serious Bordeaux without the serious price tag, this is the bottle to reach for. Château Beychevelle's second wine has the pedigree of Saint-Julien's neighbour but the ease of a Tuesday night dinner.
The glass shows a deep garnet colour, with blackcurrant, blackberry and blueberry leading the way, followed by elderflower, black pepper and a whisper of liquorice. The attack is smooth, built on ripe fruit, then the middle of the mouth turns powerful, carried by tannins that are firm but never rough. The finish runs long and spiced, with a final note of dark chocolate.
Pour this alongside a grilled steak or a rack of lamb, and it will hold its own just as well next to duck breast. Open it half an hour before serving, at around 17°C, and let the fruit settle in the glass.
