Criteria to Consider When Choosing a Wine Subscription

Diversity of Wines Offered

When we talk about wine subscriptions, diversity is paramount. A good service should offer a wide range of grape varieties and regions, allowing you to vary your pleasures while discovering new wine horizons.

Some wine boxes focus on local Swiss wines while others include international selections. It's essential to check this aspect to ensure the wine experience offered matches your desires.

In short, if you only drink Swiss wine and want to stay in your comfort zone, go for a 💯 Swiss wine subscription. On the other hand, if you want to travel through different wine regions around the world, head towards services that offer a broader range.

Quality of Selected Wines

The quality of wines is undoubtedly one of the most important criteria. The wine specialists behind these subscriptions, often sommeliers, rely on their refined palates and network of partner estates to guarantee expert selections.

Don't hesitate to check customer reviews and ratings of previous vintages to get an idea of what you can expect. Some subscriptions even offer detailed sheets for each wine, providing more transparency about what you're buying.

Be careful though: the vast majority of wine subscriptions will favor a monthly surprise selection. You don't have control over the wines delivered and that's kind of the game. But you need to be aware that the selection is mostly made by taking large allocations from the same estate, which guarantees an attractive price at the expense of a selection purely based on quality. Also watch out if they're pushing old stock or old vintages on you. That's rarely a good sign.

Delivery Frequency and Flexibility

Monthly delivery is the norm for most subscriptions, but it's always good to check if other options are available. Some consumers prefer to receive their wines every two months or quarterly, depending on their needs. This also has the advantage of reducing alcohol consumption and of course spreading out expenses.

Flexibility is also crucial. Being able to modify the delivery date or the number of bottles without difficulty makes the experience much more enjoyable.

Top 5 Wine Subscriptions in Switzerland for 2025

The Best of Swiss Wines with SwissGrapes

Founded in 2013 over a good glass of wine, the SwissGrapes crew decided to start a company to help a friend who had just opened a restaurant in Canada and wanted to showcase Swiss wines. More than a decade later, SwissGrapes has launched numerous projects, such as collaborations with many local estates and festive, friendly events. Today they offer a range of subscriptions focused on Swiss wines.

SwissGrapes probably has the most flexible system on the market: 4 formulas, each in 2, 3 and 6 bottle variants, for a duration of 3 or 6 months. Payment is made in advance, so you don't have monthly payments.

The 4 formulas offered are:

  • SwissGrapes: 2 identical bottles from their collaborations with local estates. It's the cheapest option and has the advantage of offering only exclusives (but less choice). The price is CHF 149 for 3 months.
  • Discovery: a selection of specialties brought back from the four corners of Switzerland. It starts at CHF 159 for 2 bottles for 3 months and CHF 219 for the trio of bottles.
  • Red Wine Discovery: the same thing, but 100% red version. Prices go up to CHF 179 for 2 bottles for 3 months and CHF 269 for one more bottle.
  • Prestige: the team's favorites, with estates representing the cream of the crop of Swiss wine. For this decidedly premium offer, you'll need to count CHF 234 for 2 bottles and CHF 309 for 3.

Content-wise, you'll get a description sheet with each of the wines you receive.

A Tour of Mediterranean Wines with Alfavin

If you're a fan of wines from southern Europe, the specialist is called Alfavin. This wine merchant located in Lonay (VD) offers more than 400 references from Italy and Spain. The reputation of this brand is well established, as it was named the best shop in the canton of Vaud for buying Italian and Spanish wines.

Alfavin offers two subscription formulas:

  • Discovery, with hidden gems from Italy and Spain, from more confidential appellations. Rates start at CHF 55 per month for a one-year commitment. It goes up to CHF 63 per month for 3 months
  • Prestige, with prestigious vintages, for those who appreciate moving upmarket. The subscription starts at CHF 79 per month for a commitment of

The minimum commitment is 3 months, but you can also extend your subscription to 6 and 12 months. Shipping costs are included in the subscription price.

Alfavin plays the transparency card and it's much appreciated. Before you dive in, you can see the contents of the previous month's box.

Content-wise, the box contains a summary sheet for each of the bottles you'll taste. We recommend putting it in your cellar with the bottle if you don't drink it quickly.

Small detail, if you mainly like white wine, move along. Jean-Daniel and his team's selection is 90% red.

La Grappe, a 100% Valais Subscription

If you're like me, a fan of the SRF series TSCHUGGER, you can only love La Grappe's 100% Valais box. While they met on the benches of HEC Lausanne, Christopher and Fabian are now showcasing the gems from the more than 4000 hectares of vineyards in their home canton.

Their formula is simple and straightforward: 2 bottles each month, from two different cellars, each delivered with an explanatory sheet to discover all its secrets.

Three plans are offered for purchase:

  • Explora'Grappe: perfect if you want to get started and discover gems each month. The subscription is CHF 69/month for 2 bottles, as we mentioned.
  • Bio'Grappe: an organic, biodynamic and natural selection, proving that Valais estates care about the environment. This formula is CHF 79 per month.
  • Aristo'Grappe: a selection of more prestigious vintages, for which you'll need to count CHF 89 per month.

The subscription is renewed month to month and can be cancelled at any time. And we like that.

Ideal for discovering the wonders of Valais, La Grappe will be a perfect choice if you're a fan of Swiss wines. If you're more in exploration mode, obviously, you might find yourself limited, even though there are many grape varieties to highlight in the Old Country.

You can subscribe to La Grappe simply from their website.

The Grand Classic: Wine Discovery with Mövenpick

You might be discovering this while reading this guide, but before being an ice cream brand, Mövenpick is one of the largest wine cellars in Switzerland. Rather renowned on the other side of the rösti barrier, Mövenpick has a few stores open in French-speaking Switzerland. Their cellar is very complete and includes many prestigious references, though not necessarily for purists.

Riding the wave of wine subscriptions, the firm offers 3 simple and effective formulas:

  • Red Selection: 4 boxes per year of 6 red bottles, selected by their sommeliers. You need to count CHF 99 per shipment, shipping included.
  • White Selection: same, but white version.
  • Premium Red: same as the Red Selection, but with more renowned wines. The price therefore goes up to CHF 179, still for 6 bottles.

Mövenpick takes advantage of its size to cut into its margins and offer slashed prices for its wines that you find in stores. There's not really a concept behind it. It's just good wine, selected by one of the largest brands in Switzerland. You'll have quality and variety at the expense of authenticity.

The minimum commitment is 4 boxes, or a full year. The advantage is that you can pay by invoice and you're not locked in by your credit card. They also show the 6 wines that will be sent with the first order, which is pretty nice.

Mövenpick subscriptions can be ordered on their website.

Tasters, the Subscription That Cultivates Your Wine Passion

It would be impossible for me to complete this guide without talking about us. 😊

Our approach to wine subscription is radically different from our competitors. Where generally all subscribers receive the same selection each month, with Tasters, you take control of operations.

We created our subscription as an adventure where each month you tackle a wine theme. With our sommeliers, we select 3 wines that allow you to master the subject. In addition to the bottles, you have access at any time from your computer or smartphone to content to perfect your knowledge. You'll always have a complete guide, which covers all aspects of the theme in detail, the tasting notes for each wine of course, as well as the grape variety sheets presented.

You can even challenge yourself a bit: a 10-question quiz lets you see if you can show off at the next dinner with your friends 😜

Our mission is to make wine tasting accessible to everyone. We want to end the elitist barriers of this world. All our content is thus written in simple language without fuss. In fact, depending on your level, you can opt when registering for one of our 4 adventures:

  1. Tasting Basics: 5 chapters to master the essential notions of wine, including body, tannins, acidity and sweetness. This adventure is perfect for beginners.
  2. A Taste for Adventure: designed as a road trip, we take you to discover 12 wine regions in Switzerland, France, Italy and Spain.
  3. Green in the Glass: to learn all about organic, biodynamic and natural wines
  4. One Grape, Three Terroirs: for enthusiasts who are further along in their journey, we show you how the same grape can take on a different taste depending on where it's grown

When you sign up, you choose where you start, but also the number of bottles you want to receive and the time between each shipment (every month, every 2 months or every 3 months). The subscription starts at CHF 69/box for 2 bottles, CHF 99/box for 3 bottles and CHF 169 for 2x 3 bottles.

If you'd rather give the subscription as a gift, you just have to choose the number of bottles per delivery and the duration you want to offer. We even give you a small discount if you opt for a full year.

All information about our wine subscription is available on our website.

Why Choose a Wine Subscription in 2025?

A Perfect Wine Gift

A wine subscription makes a particularly appreciated gift. Ideal for birthdays, year-end holidays or simply to please someone, it's a present that keeps on giving for several months. And with the embarrassment of choice currently available in Switzerland, it's sure to delight all profiles of wine fans.

Whether for a novice who wants to discover the basics or for enthusiasts looking for rarities, a subscription offers that unique flexibility to be adapted to everyone.

Easy Access to Exclusive Wines

Thanks to these services, it becomes possible to taste wines rarely found in traditional commerce. Often, subscriptions include special cuvées reserved only for members, thus adding a touch of exclusivity. You also benefit from the knowledge of sommeliers, who are delighted to be able to share their favorites in an original way.

This eliminates the stress of constantly having to search for new wines. Instead, you just wait for your monthly delivery to savor constantly renewed novelties.

Continuous Learning

Regularly receiving different wines also allows you to develop your knowledge and palate. Learning to identify the characteristics specific to each grape variety, recognizing the signs of a particular terroir, and knowing how to appreciate the subtleties of aging are all integral parts of the experience.

The information provided with each bottle plays a crucial educational role, transforming each tasting into an educational opportunity.

How to Expand Your Wine Knowledge Around Your Subscription?

Attend Events

Some subscriptions offer special events such as online tastings or meetings with winemakers. These are privileged opportunities to deepen your knowledge and ask questions directly to the estates of the wines you're tasting.

These moments also allow you to share your impressions with other enthusiasts and expand your circle of wine-loving friends.

Keep a Tasting Journal

To really get the most out of your subscription, keep a journal to note your impressions of each bottle. This helps track the evolution of your tastes and quickly spot your preferences.

You can record details such as the grape variety, vintage, region, detected aromas, successful pairings, and why not, personal memories associated with each tasting.

🤐 Small bonus: on Tasters, your tasting journal is right in your pocket, since all the wines you taste end up in your cellar.

Experiment with Food and Wine Pairings

Each wine has its favorite dishes that reveal the best of itself. Take advantage of your subscription to experiment with different combinations and discover new harmonies. The suggestions provided with the bottles are often a good starting point. On Tasters, each bottle sheet will give you suggestions for good little dishes to cook to savor your bottle in complete serenity.

Also think about organizing themed tasting evenings with friends, where everyone brings a dish and together, you explore possible pairings. These friendly moments are often rich in discoveries and passionate discussions around the table.
