Cabernet JuraA rare Alpine treasure hiding in the shadows of the Jura Mountains

Cabernet Jura is an obscure red grape variety indigenous to the Jura region of eastern France, nestled along the Swiss border. Despite sharing "Cabernet" in its name, it has no genetic relationship to the famous Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc—a curious naming quirk that has confused wine lovers for generations!

This ancient variety nearly disappeared during the phylloxera crisis of the late 19th century and today exists in only tiny plantings, making it one of France's rarest grapes. A handful of dedicated winemakers in the Jura are working to preserve this piece of viticultural heritage, producing small quantities of wines that showcase the grape's rustic mountain character and ability to express the region's unique limestone-rich terroir.

How to recognize this grape variety?

Cabernet Jura produces light to medium-bodied red wines with earthy, forest-floor characteristics. Expect aromas of red berries—particularly wild strawberries and cranberries—layered with notes of dried herbs, mushrooms, and a distinctive mineral streak. The palate shows bright acidity typical of Alpine varieties, with subtle tannins and flavors of tart red fruits, damp earth, and hints of white pepper.

These wines pair beautifully with regional Jura cuisine: try them with Comté cheese, coq au vin jaune, morel mushroom dishes, or charcuterie. The grape's earthy profile and vibrant acidity also complement roasted game birds and root vegetable gratins perfectly.
