GaranoirSwitzerland's modern red grape crossing Gamay with Reichensteiner for Alpine elegance
Garanoir is a relatively young Swiss grape variety, created in 1970 at the Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil research station through a crossing of Gamay and Reichensteiner. This deliberate hybridization aimed to produce a grape suited to Switzerland's cooler climate while maintaining excellent ripening potential and disease resistance.
Though still rare outside Switzerland, Garanoir has gained recognition primarily in the cantons of Valais, Vaud, and Geneva. It produces wines with deeper color and more structure than its Gamay parent, making it popular both as a single varietal and in blends. The grape ripens reliably even in challenging Alpine conditions, producing yields that balance quality with consistency—a significant achievement for Swiss winemakers seeking homegrown red varieties.
What makes Garanoir special is its ability to express terroir while maintaining approachability, offering wine lovers a distinctly Swiss interpretation of fresh, fruit-forward red wine with surprising aging potential.
How to recognize this grape variety?
Garanoir delivers vibrant aromas of fresh red berries—particularly strawberry, raspberry, and red cherry—often accompanied by floral violet notes and subtle peppery spice. On the palate, expect juicy red fruit flavors with moderate tannins that provide structure without heaviness, complemented by bright acidity that keeps the wine lively and refreshing.
The mouthfeel is medium-bodied with a silky texture, making it incredibly versatile at the table. Garanoir pairs beautifully with Swiss classics like fondue or raclette, but also works wonderfully with roasted poultry, grilled salmon, mushroom risotto, or charcuterie boards. Serve slightly chilled (around 14-16°C) to enhance its fresh, fruity character—perfect for both casual gatherings and more refined dining experiences.
