HárslevelűHungary's honeyed treasure that makes Tokaji wines sing with aromatic brilliance
Hárslevelű, whose name translates to "linden leaf" in Hungarian, is one of the noble grape varieties responsible for the legendary Tokaji wines of Hungary. This ancient variety has been cultivated in the Tokaj region since at least the 17th century, where it plays a supporting yet crucial role alongside Furmint in creating some of the world's most sublime sweet wines.
What makes Hárslevelű special is its aromatic intensity and honeyed character. The grape is particularly susceptible to noble rot (botrytis cinerea), making it ideal for Tokaji Aszú production. Beyond sweet wines, modern winemakers are also crafting excellent dry versions that showcase the grape's floral aromatics and full-bodied texture. While primarily grown in Hungary's Tokaj region, small plantings exist in Slovakia's Tokaj region as well.
This variety brings perfume, richness, and a silky texture to blends, offering a beautiful counterpoint to Furmint's high acidity and structure.
How to recognize this grape variety?
Hárslevelű enchants with its intensely perfumed nose, offering aromas of orange blossom, honeysuckle, acacia honey, and linden flowers. On the palate, expect flavors of ripe apricot, peach, honey, and candied citrus peel, with notes of ginger and exotic spices in botrytized versions. The wine has a characteristically fuller body and oilier texture compared to Furmint, with moderate acidity that provides balance without the sharp edge.
Dry Hárslevelű pairs beautifully with rich fish dishes like lobster in butter sauce, roasted chicken with herbs, and creamy pasta dishes. The sweet Tokaji Aszú versions are magnificent with foie gras, blue cheeses like Roquefort, or simply enjoyed on their own as meditation wines. The wine's honeyed sweetness and aromatic complexity also complement fruit-based desserts and nut tarts wonderfully.
