NascettaPiedmont's rediscovered treasure with captivating floral aromatics and mineral elegance
Nascetta is a rare white grape variety native to the Langhe hills of Piedmont, Italy, particularly around the town of Novello. This ancient variety nearly disappeared in the mid-20th century when just a few elderly vines remained. Thanks to passionate local winemakers in the 1990s, Nascetta was rescued from extinction and has experienced a remarkable renaissance.
The grape's name possibly derives from the Piedmontese dialect word for 'hidden' or 'concealed,' reflecting both its rarity and the secretive nature of the growers who preserved it. Today, Nascetta produces distinctive white wines that showcase the unique terroir of Alta Langa, offering a compelling alternative to the region's more famous reds like Barolo and Barbaresco. With only around 50 hectares planted worldwide, Nascetta remains one of Italy's most exclusive white wine experiences.
How to recognize this grape variety?
Nascetta wines enchant with an intoxicating bouquet of white flowers, particularly chamomile and acacia blossoms, alongside fresh stone fruits like white peach and apricot. The palate reveals delicate flavors of citrus peel, green apple, and hints of almond, all underscored by a distinctive mineral backbone that reflects the calcareous clay soils of Langhe.
Medium-bodied with crisp acidity and a slightly creamy texture, Nascetta offers excellent complexity with herbal notes of sage and a characteristic pleasant bitter finish reminiscent of almonds. These wines pair beautifully with seafood risotto, herb-crusted white fish, fresh goat cheese, and traditional Piedmontese antipasti. The wine's structure and aromatics also complement Asian cuisine, particularly Thai dishes with lemongrass and ginger.
