Aagne

Hallau, ThurgovieSwitzerland

The Aagne winery sits in the heart of Hallau, a village in the Schaffhausen canton that locals call Blauburgunderland, or Pinot Noir country. The Gysel family has been making wine here for generations, and their vineyards spread across Hallau, Oberhallau, Gächlingen and Wilchingen. The name aagne comes from the local dialect and means own or homemade, which captures the spirit of this family estate perfectly. The terroir here is special. Schaffhausen lies in the rain shadow of the Black Forest, tucked into the eastern foothills of the Jura mountains. This gives the region a mild, dry climate that works beautifully for growing grapes. The soils are limestone sediments mixed with varying amounts of clay and loam, creating that distinctive mineral character you find in the wines.

The Winemakers

Stefan Gysel runs the winery today alongside his parents Erich and Irma. He's a trained winemaker and oenologist who studied at the Wädenswil wine school and did a formative internship in South Africa. At just 32, he was named Best Swiss Winemaker at the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse in 2009. His wife Nadine Saxer runs her own family winery in Neftenbach, and the couple works closely together across both estates. Stefan brings a modern approach while respecting the family's traditional knowledge. The estate has been awarded Best National Producer twice in a row at the AWC Vienna competition. The philosophy here is simple: good wines from good grapes. The family cultivates around 10 hectares with low yields and hand harvesting. They favor sustainable, ecological production methods that promote biodiversity in the vineyards.

The Wines

Aagne produces a diverse range that showcases both classic Swiss varieties and international grapes. Pinot Noir is the star, as you'd expect in Schaffhausen, with several expressions from the Classic to late harvest Spätlese and barrel-aged versions. The whites include Riesling-Silvaner (Müller-Thurgau), which won Best of its Kind in Switzerland at the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse. They also make Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Rhine Riesling. On the red side, you'll find Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Bordeaux blends like their Cabernet-Merlot and the Credo cuvée. There's even a Pinot Noir rosé and a special eau-de-vie called Diwii. The wines have won multiple gold and silver medals at major Swiss and international competitions, earning respect from both wine professionals and everyday enthusiasts.
