Azienda Agricola Monte del Frà

SommacampagnaItaly

The story of Monte del Frà reaches back to 1492, when friars from the Santa Maria della Scala order settled on this land near Verona and began making wine. The name itself means "mountain of the brothers" in the local Veronese dialect. In 1958, Massimo Bonomo rented two rooms and the surrounding land, opening a traditional frasca wine shop and cultivating wheat, strawberries, peaches and grapes. The turning point came in 1988 when his sons Eligio and Claudio converted all the family lands into vineyards and established Monte del Frà as a dedicated wine estate. The estate sits in Sommacampagna, where ancient glaciation created soft hills and a terroir of white stones that delivers exceptional minerality to the wines. These rolling morainic hills of white stone give a unique character to the wines, with minerality and salinity as key trademarks.

Today, the Bonomo family is in its third generation, with brothers Eligio and Claudio joined by their children Marica, Silvia and Massimo. Eligio and Claudio serve as passionate leaders, offering huge contributions toward the vision of terroir and value, teaching these principles to the next generation every day. The family's winemaking philosophy is simple: the winemaker isn't the protagonist in the glass, but rather must transmit the identity of the terroir and fuse land and grapes together with a focus on elegance. Monte del Frà holds SQNPI certification for integrated farming, using green manure, sexual confusion, micro-drip irrigation and no chemical weeding. They use the sovescio technique, planting new herbs to remineralize the terroir, giving the vines a long life, which is the secret to unique character and style. Today the property holds about 200 hectares of cultivated land across Custoza, Valpolicella Classica, Lugana and Bardolino, making them a leading Venetian quality winemaker.

Monte del Frà represents the most notable regional wines in Verona: Custoza, Lugana, Valpolicella and Soave. The estate cultivates a diverse range of varietals including Garganega, Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, Chardonnay, Trebbiano, Cortese, Incrocio Manzoni, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling. From their Lena di Mezzo estate in Fumane, they produce elegant, terroir-expressive Valpolicella Classico wines including Classico, Classico Superiore, Ripasso, Amarone and sweet red Recioto della Valpolicella Classico. Their flagship Custoza Superiore Ca del Magro has been recognized by Gambero Rosso with the prestigious 3 bicchieri award for ten consecutive years, while Wine Enthusiast recognized their Amarone as one of the top 100 wines. The estate produces five family-selected cru wines, small productions that embrace a philosophy aimed at enhancing the territory in its most extraordinary forms. With dedication and love for winemaking, they produce high-quality red, white and rosé wines, plus certified sparkling and dessert wines showcasing the finest appellations of Veneto.
