Magrez Bernard - ses vignobles du Sud
Pessac, Gironde
Bernard Magrez is a name that resonates through the wine world like few others. Born in Bordeaux in 1936, this self-made wine magnate built an empire that spans 42 estates across 10 countries. His headquarters sits in Pessac, where his crown jewel, Château Pape Clément, has been producing wine since 1252. This is one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux, and it's where Magrez's story truly begins.
The journey started in the 1980s when Magrez acquired Château Pape Clément, a Grand Cru Classé de Graves. The estate takes its name from Pope Clement V, who owned the property in the 14th century. The terroir here is exceptional, with gravelly-sandy soils and clay-limestone layers sitting on ancient Pyrenean alluvial terraces. The vineyard stretches across 66 hectares in Pessac-Léognan, just minutes from the city of Bordeaux. Magrez didn't stop there. He went on to acquire three more classified growths: Château La Tour Carnet in Haut-Médoc, Château Fombrauge in Saint-Émilion, and Clos Haut-Peyraguey in Sauternes. This makes him the only person to own four Grands Crus Classés simultaneously.
Magrez isn't your typical château owner. He didn't inherit vineyards or grow up in wine country privilege. At 13, he was sent to an apprenticeship center to learn woodworking. By 19, he was working at a Bordeaux wine house, learning the business from the ground up. He made his fortune in spirits first, founding William Pitters and creating the Malesan wine brand. But wine became his true passion. His philosophy is simple: great wine comes from great terroir. He traveled the world studying vineyards, understanding that soil and climate give each wine its unique character. When he takes over an estate, he brings meticulous attention to detail, lower yields, parcel-by-parcel work, and rigorous selection. He brought in consultant Michel Rolland in 1993, and the quality has never been better.
Magrez is also a pioneer in innovation. At Château Fombrauge, electric robots have replaced herbicides. At Pape Clément, digitally-connected barrels monitor aging in real time. The estate holds environmental certifications and has joined the Bordeaux Wine Environmental Management System. Magrez even created a startup incubator dedicated to wine innovation, helping nearly 100 entrepreneurs launch their businesses. He's not just preserving tradition, he's pushing it forward.
The wines from Bernard Magrez's estates span the full spectrum of Bordeaux excellence. Château Pape Clément produces both red and white wines. The red is typically a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, showing power and elegance with notes of dark berries, smoke, and graphite. The white combines Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Sauvignon Gris, and Muscadelle, delivering complexity and freshness. Château Fombrauge, the largest Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Émilion at nearly 60 hectares, produces rich, velvety reds. Château La Tour Carnet offers classic Médoc structure and depth. Clos Haut-Peyraguey delivers sublime Sauternes. Beyond Bordeaux, Magrez produces wines from Languedoc-Roussillon, Provence, and estates in Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Japan, and California. Each property reflects its terroir while bearing the unmistakable mark of Magrez's quest for excellence.
