Bodegas D. Mateos

Back in 1886, a young couple planted a small vineyard on the slopes of Monte Yerga, not knowing that this decision would shape the next seven generations. Bodegas D. Mateos is a family winery located in Aldeanueva de Ebro, the heart of Rioja Baja, now known as Rioja Oriental. The winery has about 100 hectares of vineyards with an average age of 45 years. The vineyard is planted at a height of between 375 and 650 meters on the slopes of Mount Yerga, creating diverse microclimates that give each wine its unique character. The terroir here is special, with altitude differences and varied soils that allow different grape varieties to find their ideal spot.

The winery was constructed in 2000 and has been led by Mateo Ruiz, who represents the seventh generation of this winemaking family. Mateo Ruíz, owner, winegrower and oenologist, has devoted special interest to Graciano and Tempranillo Blanco during recent years, conducting research projects with CIDA and the University of La Rioja. The winemaking sets itself apart from other Rioja producers by relying less on the use of oak and focusing more on how best to demonstrate the quality of fruit. They prioritize quality over quantity, with an annual production of approximately 250,000 bottles. The estate practices sustainable viticulture, respecting the rhythm of the land.

The winery uses hundreds of barrels, with 85% French oak from Allier, Tronçais, Nevers, Bertranges and Jupilles, while 15% is American oak from Pennsylvania, Ohio and Missouri. This careful barrel selection creates complex and elegant aromatic profiles. The majority of cultivation is dedicated to Tempranillo and Garnacha varieties, with plots also dedicated to Mazuelo, Graciano and Tempranillo Blanco. The vineyards include old vines over 70 years old that bring depth and concentration to the wines.

The winery produces three ranges: the Letargo range represents an homage to traditional Rioja styles, the Tio Martin range is a step up in complexity, and the Coleccion de Familia range represents the best the winery has to offer. La Mateo is a personal wine that pays homage to past generations, while the IN line is designed to adapt to current tastes. La Vanidosa showcases the potential of Garnacha, made from vines that Mateo's grandfather singled out as particularly fantastic. Each wine expresses the character of Rioja Oriental with elegance and authenticity.
