Cascina Galarin
Castagnole delle Lanze, Piémont
The story of Cascina Galarin begins in the late 1700s, when the family's ancestors built the cellar by hand, stone by stone. They added a solid wooden door with a carved rooster to the family home, which still exists today and inspired both the winery's name and logo, since Galarin has always been the family's nickname. The estate sits 1.5 km from Castagnole delle Lanze, in a quiet, sunny position on a slope, right in the heart of Piedmont's wine country. From the property, you get stunning views over the Langhe hills, with the Alps and Monte Viso dominating the horizon.
In the late 1980s, Giuseppe Carosso joined the business as oenologist, leading a significant shift in the winery's philosophy. Giuseppe understood the importance of meticulous vineyard management and taking great care during the growing process, selecting only the best grapes during vinification and aging while respecting the variety and terroir. Today, Giuseppe works alongside his sons Marco and Giovanni, continuing a family tradition that spans over two centuries. Giovanni Carosso now leads the estate, cultivating 8 hectares of old vines with care and respect.
The family believes that high-quality wine starts in the vineyard, so they don't use herbicides or pesticides, instead promoting the growth of various herbs among the vines. Since the 2016 vintage, Cascina Galarin has been certified organic. The vineyard contains only old vines, and no thinning is done since the plants have reached optimal productive balance. During bottling, little sulfur is used and it's done only on waning moon days.
The estate cultivates important Piedmontese grape varieties including Barbera, Moscato, Nebbiolo, Arneis, and Freisa, alongside Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their portfolio includes Barolo, Prà Dône Moscato d'Asti, Tinella Barbera d'Asti Superiore, Carossi Chardonnay, Barivel Langhe Arneis, Crocevia Monferrato Nebbiolo Superiore, Le Querce Barbera d'Asti, and Dedicato Brut Rosé. The wines range from fresh, approachable styles to more structured expressions that showcase the depth of these historic vineyards.
