Château La Coste
Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade, Bouches du Rhône
Château La Coste sits in the heart of Provence, just 20 minutes from Aix-en-Provence in the village of Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade. The estate spans 200 hectares of rolling countryside, where vineyards mingle with cypress trees, stone pines, olive groves and oak forests. This land carries a rich history. Wine has been made here since Roman times, and the property's elegant country house dates back to 1682, built in Palladian style at the behest of the Bishop of Aix. The terroir is exceptional. Clay-limestone soils combine with a Mediterranean climate to create wines of remarkable freshness and aromatic complexity. Temperature variations between day and night allow the grapes to mature slowly, developing elegance and finesse.
A Modern Vision Rooted in Nature
In 2002, Irish entrepreneur Patrick McKillen purchased the estate and transformed it completely. His vision was clear: make terroir-driven wines using only sustainable methods, while creating a destination where wine, art and architecture live in harmony. The turning point came in 2006 when he appointed winemaker Matthieu Cosse, a talented craftsman who trained in Cahors. Cosse revolutionized the vineyard management, planting varieties according to their terroir suitability rather than commercial trends. The estate achieved organic certification in 2009, and by 2013 all 200 hectares were farmed organically. Today, biodynamic principles guide the work in the vineyards, prioritizing quality over quantity and respecting the natural rhythms of the seasons. Architect Jean Nouvel designed the state-of-the-art cellar, inaugurated in 2008. The striking building features two above-ground structures and huge underground vats accessed by steel footbridges. This technology protects the natural expression of the grapes while providing optimal conditions for winemaking.
Wines That Express Provence
Château La Coste produces wines under the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence and IGP Portes de Méditerranée appellations. The range includes four red wines: Le Grand Vin, La Grande Cuvée, Les Pentes Douces and Le Rouge, crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Grenache Noir and Syrah. These reds combine notes of forest floor, red berries and subtle wood. The rosés showcase the estate's signature freshness and elegance. Le Rosé d'Une Nuit, Le Grand Vin Rosé and Le Rosé Château La Coste offer subtle yet expressive profiles perfect for Mediterranean cuisine. White wines include Le Blanc, a blend of Viognier, Grenache Blanc and Chardonnay, alongside Les Pentes Douces and Le Grand Vin Blanc. The estate also produces La Bulle de La Coste, a traditional sparkling wine. From approachable entry-level bottlings to structured wines for cellaring, each cuvée reflects the generous Provençal terroir and meticulous organic farming practices.
