Domaine Michel Noëllat

Vosne-RomanéeFrance

The story of Domaine Michel Noëllat begins in the 19th century when Félix Noëllat founded the estate in Vosne-Romanée. The property passed through generations—Ernest, Henri, and finally Michel, after whom it is named. Today, the sixth generation, represented by Sophie and Sébastien Noëllat, passionately and dynamically continues the family legacy. Spanning 23.5 hectares, the estate encompasses over a hundred plots from Marsannay to Pommard, allowing for the production of 26 distinct appellations. The vines, averaging between 60 and 70 years old, contribute to the complexity and depth of the estate's cuvées. This mosaic of terroirs across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune gives the family an incredible playground to express different facets of Burgundy.

Since 2012, the estate has been managed by the 6th generation cousins, Sébastien, in charge of viticulture, and Sophie on the winemaking and commercial side. The family has always balanced tradition with innovation. In 2007, the domaine equipped itself with a very modern cellar equipped with about forty temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and a new tasting cellar. The domaine cultivates 23.5 hectares organically and currently vinifies 26 appellations. Hand harvesting, full destemming, and site-specific vinification are at the core of the philosophy, with fermentation carried out with natural yeasts.

Sebastian has stated that they don't want to leave the imprint of oak on their wines, so they are mostly matured in one-third of each new, one-year and two-year old oak. This measured approach lets the terroir speak. Especially noteworthy are the single vineyards Aux Allots and Aux Genaivrières, which feature vines up to 90 years old. They are now starting to get the audience and reputation they deserve, after purposefully flying under the radar and only exporting c.10% of their yearly production. The wines showcase elegance without shouting about it.

The portfolio includes prestigious Grand Crus such as Echézeaux and Clos de Vougeot, impressive Premier Crus from Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges, as well as expressive Village wines. The domaine has 2 plots of Suchots that total 1.5 hectares, while Les Beaumonts represents a whopping 1.77 hectares. The range spans several prestigious appellations including Marsannay, Fixin, Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Savigny-lès-Beaune, and Pommard. From entry-level Bourgogne Rouge to Grand Cru bottlings, the estate offers a complete picture of what these legendary vineyards can produce when treated with respect and precision.
