Montalcino, ToscaneItaly

The Marchetti family traces its roots back to the 18th century, descendants of an old patriarchal family who have always lived and farmed the land. In the early 1980s, when the landowner sold his properties, he gifted the Marchetti family the "Podere Fossacolle". In 1984, the first Sangiovese vineyards were planted, marking the beginning of their winemaking journey. The estate sits in the medieval town of Tavernelle in southern Montalcino, where four hectares of vineyards benefit from the winds of nearby Maremma, creating a perfect climate to grow and mature grapes. The soils are medium textured, tending to clay and limestone with some layers of tuff.

After the vineyards were registered as Brunello di Montalcino, the family invested in building a cellar for vinification and aging in wood barrels, releasing their first Brunello di Montalcino in January 2002, vintage 1997. Today, Sergio Marchetti and his family handle the agronomy work of the four-hectare property, while his son-in-law Adriano Bambagioni and grandson Stefano manage the winemaking and commercial aspects. Adriano trained for 10 years with Giacomo Tachis, the renowned oenologist and father of the Super Tuscan movement. The winery's philosophy is based on total respect for tradition, both in the cellar and vineyards, with just some technological adjustments always striving for the best quality.

The Brunello di Montalcino is made from 31-41 year old vines with spurred cordon trellising. The Brunello is produced only with grapes coming from the oldest vineyards. The estate also produces a Rosso di Montalcino from younger vines. The bunches are rigorously selected for quality and hand-picked into small boxes, followed by gentle pressing and pre-fermentation at low temperatures in steel and wood fermenters. The wine undergoes both primary and secondary fermentation in cement and is racked into French and Slavonian oak of various sizes for two years.

The estate produces around 16,000 to 17,000 bottles of their classic Brunello di Montalcino each vintage. In exceptional years, they release a Riserva, with just 2,000 bottles produced. The wines have earned consistent praise from critics, with reviewers highlighting their elegant, supple character and traditional style. The small production and meticulous attention to detail reflect a family deeply connected to their land and committed to expressing the authentic character of southern Montalcino.
