Lüthi Weinbau

Männedorf, ZürichSwitzerland

Rico and Susan Lüthi started their journey at Lake Zurich about 25 years ago. They farm just 2 hectares of prime steep vineyard sites in Stäfa, including the top locations Ueriker Risi, Sternenhalde, Lattenberg and Püntacher. These are classic moraine hills shaped by glaciers, with diverse soils ranging from sandy loam to clay-heavy ground and gravelly limestone. The proximity to the lake creates a special microclimate that lets the grapes ripen slowly and develop complexity. Every single task from vineyard to cellar is done by hand, because the small scale allows them to be meticulous at every step.

The People Behind the Wine

Rico and Susan are quiet doers. You'll rarely find them in the office or cellar, they're almost always in the vineyards. That's where they believe the wine is truly made. Their philosophy is simple: no compromises when it comes to quality and elegance. Everything they do aims at expressing the Zürichsee terroir in the most authentic way possible. The wines are kept as unaltered as possible, shaped by the climatic particularities of each vintage. Rico doesn't try to copy Burgundy or any other region, he crafts authentic Zurich Pinot Noirs that reflect where they come from. This dedication has earned recognition, including a Gran Maestro award at Mondial du Pinot 2023 and a remarkable 97 Falstaff points for their 2023 Pinot Noir Barrique.

The Wine Range

Lüthi Weinbau produces white, rosé and red wines under the AOC Zürichsee appellation. The whites include Räuschling, a local specialty that shows crisp acidity and elegant structure, plus the rare Scheurebe with its citrus and herbal notes. There's also a Riesling x Madeleine Royale and a special R3 Räuschling project made with grapes from three different soil types around the lake. The Rosé Saigné comes from Pinot Noir with bright berry fruit and freshness. For reds, Pinot Noir is Rico's passion. The Pinot Noir élevé en barrique spends 12 months in 800-liter oak barrels after 18 days of cold maceration, delivering silky tannins and complex dark fruit. They also craft a Blanc de Noirs Brut sparkling wine using the saignée method, offering red berry notes with fine mousse.
