Möhr-Niggli Weingut AG
Maienfeld
Möhr-Niggli sits in Maienfeld, right in the heart of the Bündner Herrschaft wine region. This is where the Rhine valley opens up and the warm föhn winds from the south create perfect conditions for growing grapes. The estate works about four hectares of vines in Maienfeld, perched between 550 and 600 meters above sea level, plus another small plot in Maisprach in Basel-Landschaft. The vineyards here benefit from ancient scree deposits from the Falknis mountain range that have built up mineral-rich soils over millions of years. The high elevation means the grapes ripen slowly, keeping their freshness even as they develop full flavor. The Stellibofel site is the jewel of the estate, a monopole vineyard surrounded by dry stone walls that feels like a little clos tucked into the hillside.
The family behind the wines
The Möhr-Niggli name comes from Sina's parents, Forti and Magda, who took over the estate in the late 1980s and built it into what it is today. Now Sina and her husband Matthias Gubler run things, representing the fourth generation of winemakers in the family. Before settling back home, the couple spent years working harvests together in Italy, France, Chile and California. That experience shaped their approach, but they never lost sight of what makes the Bündner Herrschaft special. They farm without herbicides and joined the Fair'n Green certification program in 2019, committing to sustainable practices across the vineyard and cellar. Matthias spent nearly a decade making wine in the United States before returning to Switzerland, and that international perspective shows in wines that feel both rooted in tradition and quietly ambitious.
What they make
Pinot Noir is the clear focus here, as it should be in this part of Switzerland. The entry-level Maienfelder Pinot Noir spends ten months in oak and shows fresh red fruit with subtle spice. Then comes Pilgrim, their signature wine and the first one Sina and Matthias made together. It comes from their oldest vines, 30 to 50 years old, all Swiss clones. The grapes are hand-sorted and part of the harvest ferments as whole clusters in wooden vats. After that, the wine ages 14 to 20 months in Burgundian pièces. Magnus comes from the Stellibofel site and represents their top expression from Maienfeld. They also make Clos Martha and Graf from Matthias' family vineyards in Maisprach, where the limestone soils give the wines a different character. Beyond Pinot Noir, you'll find small amounts of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Viognier and even a bit of Merlot. The wines regularly earn high marks from critics like Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and Swiss publications, but they never feel like they're trying too hard.
