Tenuta Boncore

San Donaci, PouillesItaly

Domain Origin & Terroir

Tenuta Boncore sits in the heart of San Donaci, right in the middle of Puglia's Salento peninsula. This is the heel of Italy's boot, where the sun shines hard and the Mediterranean influence shapes everything. The estate is actually part of Cantina San Donaci, one of the oldest cooperatives in the region. Back in 1933, twelve farmers got together with a simple idea: pool their resources, share their knowledge, and make better wine together. What started as a small group has grown into a cooperative of around 300 members today, farming more than 320 hectares across the Salento.

The Boncore vineyard itself is special. The soils here are limestone-clay, which drain well and force the vines to dig deep for nutrients. That stress is good. It concentrates flavors and gives structure to the wines. The climate is textbook Mediterranean: hot summers, mild winters, and just enough sea breeze to keep things balanced. The vines grow mostly as alberello, the traditional bush-trained system that's been used here for centuries. It's low-yielding but high-quality, and it's perfectly adapted to the dry, sunny conditions of Puglia.

Winemaker Profile

Cantina San Donaci has always been about community. The cooperative model means that hundreds of small growers work together, guided by a team of agronomists who help with everything from choosing which varieties to plant to deciding when to prune. Quality matters here. Members are paid based on the quality of their grapes, not just the quantity. That incentive keeps standards high across the board.

The winemaking approach blends tradition with modern technology. Fermentation happens in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, which keeps the fruit fresh and clean. But aging still takes place in oak barrels stored in underground cellars that have been there for decades. The focus is on indigenous grapes, the ones that have been growing in Salento for generations: Negroamaro, Primitivo, Malvasia Nera. These varieties are perfectly suited to the terroir, and the winemakers know how to handle them. The philosophy is simple: let the land speak through the wine.

Wine Types Produced

Tenuta Boncore produces wines that showcase the best of Salento's native grapes. The Primitivo is a standout, with its deep ruby color and complex bouquet of ripe plums, red berries, and spices. It's velvety and well-structured, with enough body to pair with grilled meats or aged cheeses. The Negroamaro offers something different: darker berry fruit, earthy notes, and a touch of bitterness that gives it character. There's also an Anticaia line that highlights single-variety expressions, and blends like the Salice Salentino Riserva that combine Negroamaro with Malvasia Nera for added depth and aging potential. These wines range from approachable everyday bottles to more complex reserves that reward patience.
