M. Chapoutier
Tain l’Hermitage, Drôme
The Chapoutier family story in the Rhône Valley goes back to 1808, but the real turning point came in 1879 when Polydor Chapoutier bought his first vineyards in Tain l'Hermitage. For generations, the family grew grapes and traded wine, building a solid reputation along the way. In 1929, Marius Chapoutier constructed a new winery at the base of the legendary Hermitage hill. The business passed through the family until 1988, when Michel Chapoutier took the reins and transformed everything.
Michel didn't just maintain the status quo. He revolutionized the estate by converting all vineyards to biodynamic farming in 1991, a bold move that raised eyebrows at the time. Today, Chapoutier manages 389 hectares of organic and biodynamic vineyards and stands as the largest vineyard owner in the Hermitage appellation. The Hermitage hill itself is unique, showcasing four distinct geological eras in its soils. Michel recognized this diversity and began vinifying each parcel separately, creating single-vineyard wines that express their specific terroir with crystalline clarity.
Michel's philosophy is straightforward: healthy vines in a balanced ecosystem make great wine. Biodynamic farming isn't a marketing gimmick here, it's the core belief. Chemical pesticides and herbicides are banned. Vineyard work follows the lunar calendar, preparations are handmade, and the goal is always to let the soil speak through the wine. In the cellar, intervention stays minimal: native yeast fermentations, gentle extractions, restrained oak influence. Michel also introduced Braille on all labels in 1996, making Chapoutier the first wine producer to do so. Today, his daughter Mathilde and son Maxime represent the new generation, continuing the family's commitment to terroir-driven wines.
The range spans from accessible Côtes du Rhône to legendary single-vineyard Hermitage bottlings. The top-tier wines are grouped under the Sélection Parcellaire label, with names like Le Pavillon, L'Ermite, and Le Méal from Hermitage. These reds, made from 100% Syrah, can age for 40 to 60 years. The white Hermitage wines, crafted from Marsanne, develop profound complexity over decades. Beyond Hermitage, Chapoutier produces exceptional wines from Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas, Condrieu, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In the south, the Barbe Rac from Châteauneuf is pure Grenache from 90-year-old vines. The portfolio also includes wines from Roussillon, Alsace, Portugal, and Australia.
