About this wine
Mara is a rare Swiss grape variety, hardly known outside its home turf, and that alone makes this bottle from Laurent Berthet worth pouring for curious friends. If you like discovering something different at dinner, this one deserves a spot on your table.
The color is deep red with violet glints, hinting at a wine with backbone. On the nose, blackberry, cherry and blackcurrant lead into prune, then oregano, nutmeg and ivy add complexity. On the palate, firm, persistent tannins carry fruity and woody notes, with blackberry meeting oak moss.
Decant it for an hour before serving, at 16 to 18 degrees, to let those tannins soften. It pairs beautifully with beef tagliata or grilled meats, and holds its own with a pizza too.
